Understanding Wires & Cables
Wires and cables are the lifelines of any electrical installation – they safely carry electric current from the distribution source to appliances, lighting and control equipment. Selecting the right cable type, size and insulation is essential for performance, safety and longevity in homes, offices and industrial sites.
Indian standard colour coding
India follows a standard colour-coding system to identify conductors and ensure safe wiring practices. Use this chart for wiring jobs and documentation.
  • Red (or Brown) – Live / Phase (single-phase)
  • Black (or Blue) – Neutral
  • Green / Green-Yellow – Earth / Protective earthing
  • Yellow / Orange – Additional phases in multi-phase systems
  • Grey – Sometimes used as a second neutral/phase depending on installation practice

Note: Confirm the final scheme with your electrician or project specification, as older installations may use legacy colours.

At a glance
Quick reference for project scoping
  • Choose conductor size by load current and run length to limit voltage drop.
  • Use copper for better conductivity and flexibility; aluminium where specified and sized properly.
  • Match insulation type to environment: PVC/FRLS for interiors, XLPE/armoured for harsh conditions.
